Our project was successfully implemented, and we achieved our objectives. We established relationships with the Bo Innovation Hub in Bo and the STEM Garage in Kenema, both key institutions in the tech space that are essential for future collaborations.
In the second phase, we mapped one of the largest informal settlements in Freetown, Cockle Bay. We utilized tools developed by HOT, including the Drone Tasking Manager, fAIr, the Field Tasking Manager, and OpenAerialMap. During the campaign, we trained three community members to use Vespucci OSM, SWMaps, and field navigation tools. The mapping covered all buildings, schools, places of worship, roads, drainages, toilets/restrooms, and poles within the community.
For the first phase, we collaborated with the Bo Innovation Hub in Bo city in the southern part of Sierra Leone. We also collaborated with the STEM in Kenema. Both institutions are focused on capacitating youths with digital skills and saw this as an opportunity to collaborate with them.
We conducted four days of training in each location. We introduced the participants to openstreetmap and facilitated the creation of accounts and introduced them to ID Editor for armchair mapping. They were then introduced to Every Door and Mapillary for field mapping.
We then admonished them to keep mapping and announced the potential prizes to be won in the near future. Therefore, the organizations we partnered with have made their space available to participants to map when they are chanced.
During the HOT team's visit to Freetown, Sierra Leone from September 10th to 22nd, a comprehensive mapping methodology capturing households within informal settlements was developed. This involved the collection of drone imagery, armchair mapping, field mapping, and household enumeration. The methodology was piloted in the community of Jai-Mata in the western part of Freetown along the Cockle Bay axis. The success of this initiative led to collaboration with CRS, CODOHSAPA, and OpenStreetMap Sierra Leone. These three organizations have agreed to pool resources to completely map and validate building footprints/households using Vespucci in the three communities: Cockle Bay, Kolleh Town, and Kroo Bay.
